Expectations:

Hospitalists are medical physicians who focus primarily on the overall care of hospitalized patients. Assesses patient health by interviewing patients, performing physical examinations, updating patient records, and studying medical histories. Provides diagnostic, preventative, and therapeutic health services to patients in the hospital. Evaluates and treats patients in consultation with or as the primary attending physician. Coordinates the hospital's diagnostic, therapeutic, and consultative resources. Follows through on cases to ensure effectiveness and alter the course of treatment as indicated. Hospitalists may be required to work any time during the day or night. They may also be expected to work during weekends and holidays.

EDUCATION:
M.D. Medical Doctor or a D.O., a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree required.

LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS:
Required:
Current Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) licensure issued by the Medical Board of California.

Preferred:
Current DEA - Drug Enforcement Administration
Current National Provider Identifier NPI - National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES)

SKILLS:
Communication skills: Excellent listening and speaking skills are a requirement. Not only must hospitalists interact with patients, but they must also be able to understand and be understood by colleagues as they act as coordinators of patients' medical teams.
Interpersonal skills: Like all doctors, hospitalists need excellent interpersonal skills to establish rapport with patients and other healthcare professionals. They must be able to understand their patients' concerns and help guide them and their families.
Problem-solving: Hospitalists must be able to quickly identify problems and find solutions to them using critical thinking skills.
