Deutsch Family Wine & Spirits seeks an Enologist, Josh Cellars, based in California. The Enologist will be responsible for production and winemaking support for several of our brands and will report directly to the Senior Winemaker. This role involves supporting our cost accounting for production and interacting directly with our supply, co-packing partners, and vendors. This position offers a high degree of flexibility between working remotely and working at winemaking and production facilities across the state.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prevents/identifies/treats problem wines as needed.
  • Visits and works closely with wine supply partners and third parties.
  • Plans winemaking supplies purchase orders including oak, tannins, and concentrates.
  • Prepares and adheres to customer specifications and pro-formas.
  • Provides samples, analysis, inventory data and other information as needed.
  • Maintains finished and bulk wine inventory and costings in wine data system.
  • Maintain updated volumes in bulk wine inventory.
  • Researches and recommends winemaking/processing aids and equipment.
  • Preparing and packaging samples as needed.
  • Preparing, organizing and participating in tastings for winemaking.
  • Ability to prioritize workflow and change priorities when needed.
  • Ability to sample and make sensory evaluations during the harvest period.
  • Experienced sensory capabilities and able to work collectively as part of the winemaking team.
  • Work with our co-packing partners to ensure that all projects are planned and completed in a timely fashion.
  • Willingness and ability to drive and spend extended time at remote winemaking and production facilities.
  • Interface with the senior winemakers on any issues on a regular basis.
  • Administrative tasks include but not limited to work orders, accurate production and manufacturing records, preparing monthly reports, etc.

Qualifications:

  • 4-year Bachelor of Applied Science (Enology).
  • Must be 21 years or older at the time of hire and have a valid driver's license.
  • Production winemaking experience and 1-2 years of cellar work preferred.
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong sense of urgency to meet winemaking and production deadlines.
  • Ability to problem solve and troubleshoot in order to avoid issue escalation.
  • Strong computer skills and to be familiar with wine data management software.
  • Strong interpersonal skills in order to develop relationships with our supply and service vendors and interdepartmental teams.
  • Knowledge of production costing methods.
  • Ability to work independently from a home off within guidelines

  • Competitive compensation: Salary Range $65,000 - $76,000. Actual compensation will be based on factors such as experience, education, skills, knowledge, and other position related factors.
