Position description

University of California, Irvine, Department of Music
Opera Workshop Lecturer

The UCI Music Department is seeking a temporary instructor to teach a three-course sequence in Opera Workshop in academic year 2024-25. The courses meet twice weekly for three hours. The instructor will audition students, select repertoire to study, provide instruction over ten weeks of classes, and present a quarterly concert performance, typically in the final weeks of each quarter. Fall and winter quarter performances will take place in a recital hall with piano accompaniment, while the spring quarter performance will be in an auditorium in collaboration with the UCI Symphony. The position also involves mandatory online training required by the University, and other relevant duties as required.

Required qualifications:
A Master's degree or equivalent professional experience
Fluency in Western music notation
Experience working with conductors and singers
Strong communication and collaboration skills

Preferred qualifications:
Professional experience as a stage director, particularly in opera productions
Demonstrated expertise in vocal performance and pedagogy
Fluency with standard European languages
Evidence of successful teaching at the college or university level
Experience working with diverse student populations and promoting inclusive excellence
A record of creative accomplishments in the field
Familiarity with current trends and innovations in opera and voice studies
