JOB SUMMARY:
The Director of Cartage Services is responsible for managing cartage strategy and carrier development to provide first and last mile business and home delivery services for Maersk 60+ locations as part of our door-to-door LTL product. The Director will lead capacity strategy, company driver vs independent contracts vs agent strategy, vendor performance, and operational oversight for cartage operations. The Director will work closely with Maersk procurement to define optimal vendor profile, service SLAs, rate structure, target market costs, and driver device/technology requirements.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Develop cartage strategy to ensure a balance is maintained between cost effectiveness and capacity for dynamic driven freight volumes.

  • Plan accordingly for peak season, volume spikes and other contingencies.

  • Develop key performance metrics for vendors and hold them accountable for service performance.

  • Develop key performance metrics for Maersk stations accountable for executing cartage strategy to ensure Maersk service KPIs are at agreed levels and costs are per budgeted levels.

  • Conduct regular reviews of market conditions and plan accordingly for driver and carrier changes before service and costs are impacted.

  • Conduct regular review of cartage volumes by market to determine optimal procurement and operational strategy is in place.

  • Partner with procurement to conduct regular RFQs as needed to ensure Maersk's costs are at or below market costs.

  • Collaborate with operations excellence leadership for ongoing process analysis of cartage management systems and procedures to drive continuous improvements in operating efficiencies.

  • Effectively train, supervise, coach, and evaluate all direct reports to foster good communications and morale.

  • Other duties as assigned.

SKILLS/COMPETENCIES:

  • Customer service background preferred.

  • Ability to read key elements of financial statements in support of functional role responsibilities.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

  • Must have superior organizational and time management skills.

  • Must be approachable and motivated.

  • Knowledge of systems utilized as it relates to logistics.

  • Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office.

  • Ability to thrive in a high-pressure environment.

  • Detail oriented and analytical.

  • Strong problem-solving abilities.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Business or 5 years of experience in lieu of a degree.

  • Minimum of five (5) years in Cartage operational management and procurement.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and ERP systems.
